Which driving routes do you recommend? Routes
Popular options include Northern Xinjiang (Ili, Kanas), Southern Xinjiang (Kashgar, Pamir Plateau) and the Duku Highway. See the "Vehicles" and "Travel Guides" pages for details.
How many days does the North Xinjiang loop generally take? Routes
The classic North Xinjiang loop (Urumqi–Sayram Lake–Ili–Nalati–Bayinbuluke, or continuing to Kanas) usually takes 7–10 days. If you only travel the Ili route, it can be completed in 5–6 days. We recommend limiting driving to 300–500 km per day.
How to arrange the South Xinjiang route? Routes
A common route is Urumqi–Korla–Kuqa–Aksu–Kashgar, then using Kashgar as a base to visit the Pamir Plateau and Tashkurgan. The whole trip usually takes 8–12 days, depending on whether you extend toward Hotan.
When can the Duku Highway be traveled? Routes
The Duku Highway crosses the Tianshan Mountains and, due to winter snow, is usually open only from around June to October each year. The specific opening and closing dates vary each year. Before traveling, please check the current year's traffic notices from the local transportation department; navigation showing it as passable does not mean it is actually open.
How many kilometers per day is appropriate? Routes
We recommend 300–500 km per day and 4–6 hours of driving, leaving time for sightseeing and rest. Distances between attractions in Xinjiang are long; an overly packed schedule can easily lead to fatigue driving and also compress sightseeing time.
