1. Classic Loop Route
The common Northern Xinjiang Loop is: Urumqi — Kuitun — Sayram Lake — Yining — Nalati — Bayanbulak — (Duku Highway) — Kuqa, or continuing north to Burqin, Kanas and Hemu. The total distance ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 km, depending on whether Kanas is included.
2. Recommended Daily Mileage
Attractions in Northern Xinjiang are far apart; we recommend keeping to 300–500 km and 4–6 hours of driving per day, leaving time for sightseeing and rest. Urumqi to Sayram Lake is about 500 km, a relatively long day, so start early.
3. Seasons and Highlights
- Mid-April to early May: apricot blossom season in the Ili Apricot Blossom Valley; the window is short, so time it carefully
- June–August: the grasslands are at their greenest, and Nalati, Bayanbulak and Kalajun are at their best
- Mid-September to early October: autumn colors in Kanas and Hemu; this is peak photography season, so book accommodation in advance
4. Accommodation and Fuel
Accommodation is available at Sayram Lake, Nalati, Bayanbulak, Burqin, Hemu and elsewhere. In peak season (July–August and National Day) prices rise and rooms are scarce, so book ahead. Accommodation inside scenic areas is relatively basic; if you have high comfort requirements, stay in county towns outside the scenic areas and drive in and out each day.
5. Vehicle Recommendations
The loop is mostly paved road and passable by an ordinary sedan; if you plan to enter the heart of the grasslands, unpaved sections, or encounter rain or snow, an SUV is recommended. For group travel, a 7-seat SUV or MPV is more comfortable.
