1. This Is a Seasonal Road
The Duku Highway (the Dushanzi–Kuqa section of G217) crosses the Tianshan Mountains. Because of winter snow and ice, it is usually open only from around June to October each year. The exact opening and closing dates vary from year to year, so be sure to check that year's official traffic authority notice before traveling. It is impassable in winter and during closures; navigation may still show it as passable, so rely on official notices.
2. Basic Road Conditions
The road is about 561 km long, crossing several mountain passes, with the highest point at about 3,400 m. The northern section (the Dushanzi side) is mainly canyons and winding mountain roads, while the southern section (the Kuqa side) features red-bed landforms. The entire route is two lanes in both directions, with many curves and steep slopes, and fog is common in rain or snow.
3. How to Plan a Single-Day Crossing
- Start early (7–8 a.m.); driving time is about 8–10 hours, and with sightseeing and meals it takes a full day
- Overnight stops along the way are limited; if you don't want to drive at night, stay a night around Nalati or Bayanbulak
- Fill up before departure; gas stations are far apart along the route
4. Points to Note
- Mountain-pass sections are at high altitude with big temperature swings between morning and evening; bring a thick jacket
- Mountain roads have many curves; overtaking on curves and driving in the oncoming lane are strictly prohibited
- Visibility is low in rain, snow and heavy fog; stop and wait in a safe place if necessary and do not force your way through
- Much of the roadside is grazing land; watch out for and yield to livestock
If the road is not open that year or is temporarily closed, you can take the G30 expressway via Kuitun toward Sayram Lake, or detour via Bayanbulak; please confirm the currently feasible route with customer service.
