Autumn in northern Xinjiang draws the year's most concentrated wave of visitors. The larches and birches around Kanas and Hemu reach their best colour between mid-September and early October, and the peak window usually lasts only two to three weeks.
Timing
- Mid to late September: colours begin turning, crowds are lighter — good if you prefer quieter travel
- Late September to early October: deepest colour, coinciding with the National Day holiday, when both crowds and accommodation prices peak
- After mid-October: most leaves have fallen and snow may begin in the mountains
Vehicle notes
Demand for vehicles towards Burqin, Kanas and Hemu is concentrated in this period, so book ahead. Mountain sections have wide day-to-night temperature swings, and snow is possible by October — a well-maintained SUV is the safer choice.
Accommodation notes
Lodging inside the Kanas and Hemu areas is limited, scarce in peak season and noticeably more expensive. Travellers who want more comfort can stay in the county towns outside the scenic areas and drive in each day, but must factor the driving time into the itinerary.
