The Duku Highway (the Du Shanzi–Kuqa section of G217) crosses the Tian Shan range. Because of winter snow and ice, it is normally open only from around June to October. The exact opening and closing dates vary from year to year and are announced by the local transport authority based on weather and road conditions.
Why we flag this specifically
While the road is closed, some navigation apps still show it as passable. Planning a route on navigation alone can leave you driving to a closure point and being forced to turn back, losing a full day.
Three things to do before you travel
- Check the current year's official traffic notice from the local authority
- Re-confirm conditions the day before departure — mountain weather changes quickly
- Discuss an alternative route with our team (for example the G30 expressway via Kuitun and Sayram Lake)
While the road is open
The route is about 561 km and crosses several high passes, with the highest point around 3,400 m. Expect many bends and steep gradients, and fog in rain or snow. Never overtake on bends. Fill the tank before setting out — petrol stations are far apart. Temperatures at the passes vary widely between morning and evening, so bring a warm jacket.
