Winter in Xinjiang (December to February) brings low temperatures, possible ice on city roads, and significant snow on mountain sections and high passes. If you plan to drive yourself in winter, check the vehicle's preparation before departure.
Vehicle preparation
- Confirm the car has winter tyres, or carries snow chains
- Check that coolant and washer fluid are the antifreeze type
- Check the battery — capacity drops noticeably in cold weather
- Carry an ice scraper, a torch and a warm blanket
Driving technique
Braking distances on ice and snow increase substantially — double your normal following distance. Accelerate, steer and brake gently; avoid sudden inputs. Reduce speed before descents and use engine braking where possible.
If a road closes
Heavy snow or severe ice can lead to temporary closures of mountain sections. Follow the instructions of traffic control on site and do not attempt to detour along minor tracks. Build buffer time into your schedule; in winter it is unwise to plan long daily distances.
When self-driving is not advisable
If you have no experience driving on ice and snow, a charter with a driver who knows the local roads is the better choice in winter.
