Driving from Kashgar towards Tashkurgan along the Karakoram Highway (G314), altitude climbs quickly: Kashgar sits at about 1,300 m, several viewpoints along the way are between 3,000 and 4,000 m, Tashkurgan town is around 3,200 m, and the road towards the Khunjerab Pass goes higher still.
Reducing the risk of altitude sickness
- Sleep well the night before going up and avoid alcohol
- Do not over-pack the itinerary — give your body time to adjust
- Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous exertion
- If you develop a marked headache, nausea, chest tightness or breathlessness, descend to lower altitude and seek medical help
Border permit
Travel to border administration zones such as Tashkurgan normally requires a Border Area Permit. These can be arranged in your place of residence in China or locally in Kashgar, usually with your ID card; foreign visitors also need to provide a passport and related documents under the rules in force at the time. Policies change, so confirm the current requirements with the local police or a travel agency before you travel.
Vehicle advice
High-altitude sections have changeable weather. Choose a well-maintained SUV, and prefer a charter with a driver. Fill the tank before heading up — petrol stations are far apart.
