1. Overall Seasons

The best travel season in Xinjiang is June–October. June–August is when the grasslands and lakes are at their best, and September–October is autumn-color season in Northern Xinjiang. April–May brings apricot and wildflowers to Ili, while winter (December–February) is mainly about ice, snow and skiing.

2. Differences Between Northern and Southern Xinjiang

  • Northern Xinjiang: higher latitude and altitude, cool in summer — mornings and evenings around Kanas can even be chilly; autumn colors arrive earlier than in the south
  • Southern Xinjiang: drier and hotter; daytime in Kashgar in summer can exceed 35°C, though mornings and evenings are still cool
  • Plateau areas (Pamir, Bayanbulak): high altitude, with day-night temperature swings of more than 15°C; a jacket is needed even on summer nights

3. Dressing Principle: Layer Up

Xinjiang has large day-night temperature swings, and you may experience both short sleeves and a jacket on the same day. We recommend layering: a quick-dry base layer, a fleece or light down mid layer, and a windproof outer layer. Even in summer, bring a long-sleeved jacket and long trousers, and pack an extra thick jacket for the plateau.

4. Sun Protection and Dryness

UV rays are strong, so bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and lip balm. The climate is dry, so stay hydrated and keep drinking water in the vehicle. In dusty, windy weather, wear a mask and glasses.

5. Rain, Snow and Road Conditions

Mountain weather changes quickly, and rain or even brief hail is possible from June to September. Slow down in rain or snow, and watch for falling rocks and standing water on mountain sections. For winter self-drive, confirm that the vehicle is equipped with snow tires or tire chains.

FAQ

Is the temperature difference between day and night in Xinjiang large? How should I dress?
The temperature difference is large; you may experience both short sleeves and a jacket on the same day. We recommend layering: quick-dry inner layer, fleece or thin down middle layer, windproof outer layer. Even in summer, bring a long-sleeved jacket and long pants; for the plateau, bring an extra thick coat.
Which months are best for visiting Xinjiang?
June to October is the best travel season. From June to August, grasslands and lakes are at their best; from September to October, North Xinjiang enters the autumn color season. In April and May, Ili has apricot blossoms and wildflowers; winter is mainly for ice and snow landscapes.
Is there a time difference between Xinjiang and mainland China?
Yes, Xinjiang uses Beijing Time, but local daily schedules are generally about 2 hours later than in the mainland. In summer, it is still light after 21:00–22:00, dinner times are later, and shopping malls and restaurants also close later. Take this into account when planning your itinerary.
