1. Overall Seasons
The best travel season in Xinjiang is June–October. June–August is when the grasslands and lakes are at their best, and September–October is autumn-color season in Northern Xinjiang. April–May brings apricot and wildflowers to Ili, while winter (December–February) is mainly about ice, snow and skiing.
2. Differences Between Northern and Southern Xinjiang
- Northern Xinjiang: higher latitude and altitude, cool in summer — mornings and evenings around Kanas can even be chilly; autumn colors arrive earlier than in the south
- Southern Xinjiang: drier and hotter; daytime in Kashgar in summer can exceed 35°C, though mornings and evenings are still cool
- Plateau areas (Pamir, Bayanbulak): high altitude, with day-night temperature swings of more than 15°C; a jacket is needed even on summer nights
3. Dressing Principle: Layer Up
Xinjiang has large day-night temperature swings, and you may experience both short sleeves and a jacket on the same day. We recommend layering: a quick-dry base layer, a fleece or light down mid layer, and a windproof outer layer. Even in summer, bring a long-sleeved jacket and long trousers, and pack an extra thick jacket for the plateau.
4. Sun Protection and Dryness
UV rays are strong, so bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and lip balm. The climate is dry, so stay hydrated and keep drinking water in the vehicle. In dusty, windy weather, wear a mask and glasses.
5. Rain, Snow and Road Conditions
Mountain weather changes quickly, and rain or even brief hail is possible from June to September. Slow down in rain or snow, and watch for falling rocks and standing water on mountain sections. For winter self-drive, confirm that the vehicle is equipped with snow tires or tire chains.
