1. Plan Your Fuel Stops First, Then Your Route

In some sections of Xinjiang, the distance between gas stations can reach 100–200 km, and in the Gobi Desert and mountainous areas they are even sparser. The principle is: when fuel drops below half, find a station and fill up—don't wait until the warning light comes on. Before entering uninhabited areas, mountains, or high-altitude regions, be sure to fill up.

2. Gas Station Tips

To refuel, you must present your ID card for registration; some stations require passengers to get out and wait in a safe area. Some small stations are closed at night, so try to schedule your travel through areas with dense gas stations during the day.

3. How Average Speed Enforcement Works

Average speed enforcement calculates the average speed of a vehicle between two checkpoints. Slowing down only at the start and speeding up in the middle will still result in a speeding violation. After passing the start checkpoint, drive at a constant speed within the limit until you pass the end checkpoint. Typical enforcement zones are 10–30 km long.

4. Preventing Fatigue

  • Do not drive continuously for more than 2 hours; take a 10–15 minute rest at a service area or safe spot
  • For long trips, it is recommended to have two drivers take turns
  • Drowsiness is most likely between 13:00–15:00 and in the early morning; avoid long continuous driving during these periods
  • If you yawn, lose concentration, or drift out of your lane, stop nearby and rest immediately

5. Night Driving and Severe Weather

Some sections of Xinjiang's national highways have insufficient lighting at night, and livestock and agricultural vehicles may be on the road, so long-distance night driving is not recommended. In case of sandstorms, heavy rain, or heavy snow, reduce speed or stop nearby—safety always comes before itinerary progress.

FAQ

Is long-distance driving suitable at night?
Not recommended. Some national roads in Xinjiang have insufficient lighting at night, and livestock and agricultural vehicles are present, posing higher risks. Schedule long trips during the day, drive continuously for no more than 2 hours, and take a 10–15 minute rest at service areas.
Is refueling convenient?
There are many gas stations in major cities and along national roads, but distances in deserts and mountainous areas can be 100–200 km. The principle is to refuel when the tank is below half, and be sure to fill up before entering no-man's land, mountains, or plateaus. Refueling requires presenting an ID card for registration.
Is the temperature difference between day and night in Xinjiang large? How should I dress?
The temperature difference is large; you may experience both short sleeves and a jacket on the same day. We recommend layering: quick-dry inner layer, fleece or thin down middle layer, windproof outer layer. Even in summer, bring a long-sleeved jacket and long pants; for the plateau, bring an extra thick coat.
Which months are best for visiting Xinjiang?
June to October is the best travel season. From June to August, grasslands and lakes are at their best; from September to October, North Xinjiang enters the autumn color season. In April and May, Ili has apricot blossoms and wildflowers; winter is mainly for ice and snow landscapes.
